Answer

Ian.Thanks very much for your question. It sounds as though your drinking is starting to cause you serious problems |

Alcohol can cause a range of problems. including difficulty within the work place, with health,in relationships, and with the law. You haven't said why you are drinking so much. People use alcohol in a variety of different ways including as part of social life, as a way of coping with the stresses of life and/or to deal with a crisis in their life.

You seem to accept that your drinking is beginning to have a serious impact on your life. Therefore you may want to consider reducing your intake. The sensible drinking guidlines for adult men is 21 units, spread over the week with no more than 3-4 units being consumed at any one time. To give you an idea a pint of ordinary strength larger contains just over 2 units. For adult women this limit is a bit less, 14 units spread over the week with no more than 2-3 units at any one time. Again to give you an idea a small pub measure of spirits (25ml) is 1 unit, an average glass of wine is slightly over 2 units. I have included a link to an on-line unit calculator below. You may find it useful as it is an easy and private way to add up the total amount of units you are drinking. I have also included two other links which will provide you with some general advice about alcohol use and some more specific advice geared at employers/ employees. If you feel you would like to speak to someone face to face Tayside Council on Alcohol provide a confidential service across the Tayside are - their details can be found in the services section. You could also approach your GP for some information and advice. http://www.downyourdrink.org.uk http://www.alcohol-focus-scotland.org.uk
